So You Want to Learn Krav Maga…
Why? A strange question coming from a guy that teaches Krav Maga as a form of self-defense I know. I ask it because if you are trying to learn Krav Maga for the wrong reason you’re going to get yourself hurt or worse. There are many different types of students that show up in my training center, some are looking for a fitness program, some a self-defense program and others show up trying to figure out what they need or want.
Krav Maga, sometimes called Israeli martial arts, is the hand to hand combat techniques taught by the Israeli Defense Forces, (IDF), to all their services members as their self-defense combatives. It’s because of its simplicity, ease of learning and brutality that it’s prefect for the needs of the IDF who only have a short period of time to make sure their soldiers are combat ready.
Krav Maga was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld and designed to work with the body’s natural instincts and movements, it’s much easier to learn compared than other martial arts that take years to master. In Krav Maga there are no stances, katas, or hard to master movements, only simple, efficient moves that rely on gross motor movement. What sets Krav Maga apart from other martial arts training is that it incorporates strikes with every part of the body, always moving forward pushing the attack, never backing up. In a short period of time you’ll learn self-defense techniques that will enable you to defend yourself against any type of incoming strikes, makes no difference inside or outside, by incorporating a 360 degree defense.
How Do I Learn Krav Maga
There are really only a couple of ways to learn Krav Maga and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. The first is to find a local training center in your area and take classes there. This can be the best and worst way to learn Krav, let me explain. Because Krav Maga is not a strict form of martial arts (more martial than art) there is a very wide range in the quality of the training. When looking for a place to train you really need to research the instructor and what he teaches. I’ve seen some horrible stuff being taught as Krav Maga, when in reality all that’s being taught is a decent cardio workout. Also, listen to what the instructor has to say, Krav is as much mental as it is physical and the right mindset is critical.
Probable more important than anything else is making sure the instructor you choose has real life experience to draw from. Would you rather have a guy teaching you who only knows theory and has never been in a fight before or would you rather have someone who has had to actually use what he teaches? I like to tell my classes that all is well and good right up to the point that someone hits you right in the face, at that point it gets real in a hurry. As the saying goes, no better teacher than experience.
What About Krav Maga DVD Training?
The first question I always get asked about video training programs is, “can I learn to fight and learn self defense techniques from a Krav Maga DVD?. Absolutely. Would it be better for you to come to my training center twice a week and train with us? You bet it would but I know that’s not always an option for some.
Just like looking for a Krav Maga training center you need to do your research on the instructor and what he teaches. Sometimes it’s easier to research Krav Maga DVDs than it is to find information on local instructors. Anyone selling on www.amazon.com or any of the other online retailers will typically have a number of reviews allowing you to see the good and the bad from a student’s perspective. Remember, don’t just look for the first few reviews, check the negative ones and you’ll get a good look at the instructor and the training material.
A couple parting thoughts on Krav Maga DVDs. It can be very expensive and time consuming to train at a local facility but if you find the right instructor teaching the right Krav Maga techniques you can’t beat it.
Training at home by yourself or with a training partner can be equally effective if you find the right training program and you commit to training 2 or 3 times a week. Krav Maga DVDs are also a more cost effective solution if you do not have the budget to attend onsite training on a regular basis. Finally, it’s been my experience that “Quality” Krav Maga training is hard to find, so be diligent in your research.
Krav Maga is the Best Self-Defense Training
In my expert opinion Krav Maga is by far the best self-defense training for those looking to learn how to defend themselves. It’s a simple program that relies on gross body movements than can be learned in a short period of time. Krav Maga is brutal and will get the job done.
